This hotel is typical of European hotels in 'the old city' areas - small rooms, tired decor.....however, this hotel is an exceptional 'stand out'. The staff were very friendly and helpful with great local tips (including being able to buy tickets for the funicular up to Brunate at the hotel to avoid the queues at the station). And they make a great cappuccino as well! After 3 days we felt like a part of the family. The room was comfortable and an easy walk to the piazza, promenade and train station. The hotel is easy to find from the street and a great base to explore the Lake Como region. This hotel is located almost on the edge of the lake and a short walk to main piazza in the old city. It is within walking distance of Como San Giovanni train station (there are some steps to navigate). Buy a Day Pass on the lake and head to Bellagio and Vareena, or up to Brunate via the Funiculare.

Superficially an ideally situated place but noisy. Hotel front desk over assertive and aggressive in contrast to charming and helpful room staff. A demand for payment upon entry was most surprising as the hotel held credit card particulars beforehand. The hotel senior staff might benefit from 'charm school'. It is a hotel that but for its noise problem has the potential to excel.
My family all enjoyed our stay at the Barchetta Excelsior very much. The rooms were in good order with excellent air conditioning. The towels and sheets were changed every day, which was great as the weather was so hot. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. The location was the best we could have asked for - right near the ferries and the Duomo. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.
We had a lovely, newly refurbished room, with a side view of the lake and overlooking the town square and cafe's. A great location within sight of buses and boats with which to explore the lake and local area. The Hotel is traditional, but the room we had was sympathetically renovated and large. The staff were all friendly and happy to help with any questions we had. They also spoke perfect English, so there won't be a problem for anyone who doesn't speak Italian. Prior to our arrival the Hotel arranged a car and driver to meet us at Milan airport and take us back at the end of our stay, so we didn't have to worry about anything. Its worth contacting the Hotel and talking to them about your requirements.
"Great location, great breakfast, staff and clean!"
A very large hotel, we upgraded to a suite which was lovely, exceptionally clean. October seemed quiet in Como. A very beautiful place, suprisingly not lots of atmosphere, but this maybe down to the fact it was October?
Visited Bellagio on the ferry. Either Catamaran or Hydrofoil if you choose the fast boat...takes just over an hour. I would highly recommend this trip but Bellagio is very small so a couple of hours there is ample. The Fenicular to the top of the mountain is a must. There is a tour bus if you are unable to hike, which will take you to the light house..the walk is approx 30 mins, which was well rewarded by the view once there.
Como has lots of expensive clothes shops, pavement cafes and a Cathedral.
Hotel was comfortable, staff very helpful and friendly, their English was exceptional. Read lots of negative reviews on wifi, we had a 15 year old with us who used a lot, you do have to buy, but a small percentage in terms of overall holiday, and worked well. I would recommend the Junior Suite we stayed in, which was both spacious and comfortable. With three of us in the room the seating area was very welcome whilst relaxing. The hotel could not be faulted!
