Hotel Vera is clean and - though there were no frills in my budget single room - all the basics (abundant hot water, comfortable bed, plentiful storage) were present and the little fridge in the room was a useful addition. Not a huge room but big enough; my only gripes: an uncomfortable hard chair to sit on and centrally-controlled air conditioning, meaning that unless you want to keep calling reception, you're stuck with the management decision of when to turn it on and off.
The staff are friendly and helpful and happy to assist with arranging taxis etc, and though I didn't sample the breakfast offered with my room - I preferred to breakfast in my room - the other gusets looked happy enough, so assume it was nice.
The hotel is a little off the beaten tourist track, but as reception advised, this isn't an issue as there are very frequent buses (40 roubles, conductor on board, numbers 5, 7 and 11 all go to the Hermitage or beyond), which whiz you around very efficiently and on the whole are better than the relative slow and not so easily negotiated Metro!
