Great location
The hotel is on a quiet street. walk distances to shopping centers, numerous restaurants and subway. There is a big garden with a nice coffee shop in the hotel. The room is big, but the 2 sofas in my rooms have stains, and the carpet and curtains are old.

Nice hotel in the French Concession
It is a perfect place to stay in the French Concession. Opposite side is the Shanghai Conservatory of Music... a few blocks from IAPM and Uniqlo HuaiHai branch...Quiet environment... building is some distance away from Fenyang Lu. Great place to stay.

We liked being in the French Concession and not far from subway stop with three lines. Third person in room cost (about 23 bucks) was a lot cheaper than other hotels in area. Sheets, comforter and beds were good quality. Building is 6 floors and not huge high-rise. Go to Lost Heaven restaurant, one in French Concession and one in Bund area. Best Chinese food I've ever had. It is Yunnan folk/ Burmese cuisine.

Peaceful historic estate and gardens on property
Quiet, tranquil setting inside gates made it a nice respite from busy street life, several beautiful corner parks close by, but also close to shopping and expat neighborhoods and nightlife; 10 min walk to subway to peoples square.

Great service--immediately brought anything we asked for to our hotel room. Next to iapm, a large, luxurious shopping mall with amazing food for very reasonable prices and cute shops. Comfortable room; no complaints.

Rewards Redempton Stay
Tucked away off the busy streets and set in a nice garden surrounding. Reception staff very welcoming and helpful. Internet Connection via Cable and Wifi modem available with excellent signal speed. A short walk to a very new shopping centre with a great choice of restaurants over several levels. Our Balcony view was great sunset view behind the city buildings. Very comfortable and relaxing place to stay. No noisy traffic.

ok hotel in center of F.C.
Hotel is set up by the Chinese Government. Location is good and in the middle of the French Concession. Internet and international connection is terrible even for Chinese standards. Service, understanding and communication in English language is terrible. I don't deserve 4 star recommendation and I won't recommend my friend to this hotel. For me it was a big dissapointment

hard beds...Standard low end Chinese hotel..Rates their hotel as a 5 star and should be about a 2 star.. AC does not cool down rooms. No English speaking staff. No help with luggage. The list goes on. I had this hotel booked for additional nights and cancelled after first night.

The hotel is ideally located within the French Concession and close to both high end shopping and the conservatory. While the staff is not completely fluent in English, their language skills are strong enough to deal with most routine requests that guests might have.

despite some flaws, we would return to this hotel.
hotel is hard to find. don't forget to give precise description of location in chinese to taxi driver. hotel does not respond to email communication if you want to ask anything previous to stay. no direct email address and site is obsolite. however, it is a great place to stay, as far as the neighborhood and quiet garden. the room described, two beds, did not come with balcony as stated. front staff english is not great, and not too helpful at times. room is very clean, and a good size. problem with doors that are too heavy. you can be disturbed by noisy guest that slam doors early or late. but price is right.

Lovely Hotel
This was a gracious hotel in a lovely neighbourhood in the French Quarter, near the Symphony Orchestra hall, thus abounding with music schools and shops, and music students. We enjoyed walking the tree-lined streets and the main road with Metro, big shops, restaurants etc was only a block away.In spite of this our room was very quiet and we appreciated the lovely lawned gardens. There was a lot of parking available. The mini bar had a range of beer juices and spirits but no wines in spite of the listed ''Golden Wine''. We called for Golden Wine to be delivered to our room- twice- and each time they brought Gordon's Gin. They had no idea what wine is. The dining room served only Chinese and we could not understand the menu so went elsewhere. Rooms were quite spacious and had a lovely garden outlook, comfortable beds, shower, toiletries and were very quiet. We would return.

Very comfortable. Outstanding location. Competent and friendly staff. Nice breakfast spread. No bath tub in the rest room. Wifi not reliable. Picture of the hotel on the website does not show the main building. The garden view is not available to most guests. Will stay there again in the future.

Great experience. I always stay in this part of Shanghai. Find the hotel very welcoming and comfortable. Will certainly consider staying here on future trips if on offer through Expedia.

We spent a marvelous four nights at Fenyang Garden Hotel. It feels like a boutique hotel in the midst of a bustling city. Beautiful grounds, lovely atmosphere and every comfort at a reasonable price, We would highly recommend it!

We enjoyed our stay here so much. The room was spacious and well appointed. We were able to check in early with no problems. It was rainy but the room had an umbrella we could use. It was right in French concession, close to great restaurants like Madison's and shops etc... I'd definitely stay here again

I really enjoyed staying in this hotel. I was able to quickly walk to eating and drinking establishments, as well as the subway. There are not too many touristy things nearby, but that didn't bother me at all.

loved my visit. Resonable rates, location was in a "neighborhood" where one experiences real life situations and great/ cheap street food!!!!. Felt safe day and night. convenient to subway , many restaurants close by. Would definately stay there again

Most experiences very good. One problem experienced was that our electricity adaptors in my friends' and my room didn't fit well. Too loose and sometimes couldn't easily connect with our computers. Even the hotel staff couldn't figure it out. Also, most of the staff, though friendly, had trouble understanding English unless it was an easy question. I often found them talking to each other in Chinese to work out what was being said. Not good where English is usually the common language. One example was when I asked where we could go for a drink and they recommended the coffee shop in the next block. When I tried saying 'alcoholic' and 'glass of wine' they talked together and could only think of a place that was a 15 minute taxi ride away. Later in our stay we saw that there was places within walking distance.

Very lovely hotel, helpful staff, great breakfast buffet. Clean, large room, comfortable bed, and enough floor space for both my wife and me to do yoga together. Only drawback is that the wired internet in the room is the slowest I have encountered in more than a decade, and the wi-fi in the lobby is even worse. It's not for anyone with lots of online work to do, but I managed to take care of a few emails. Other than that, our stay was fantastic. The proximity to the Conservatory makes it ideal for visiting musicians. There are also some very new luxury-brand shopping areas nearby.

The hotel is nice, rooms are spacious and modern. They gave us a smoking room, when i specifically asked for non-smoking. Staff can't speak english very well, there is no wifi in the rooms only the lobby. Has a very small gym with basic machines. The location of the hotel is very good, right in the middle of the french concession.

A quite hotel, yet close to everything
Despite being located close to Huaihai Road and its luxury shopping and traffic, the Fenyang Garden Hotel was a quite oasis for my visit to Shanghai. Convenient to subway stops (the #10 line station is just around the block), I found the neighborhood charming in its own right. I found plenty of little restaurants and sidewalk stands from which to get my meals, so I can't tell you a thing about the hotel's own restaurant. It was located within plausible walking distance from Tianzifang, the newly opened IAPM mall, and subway connections to Nanjing Road (if Huaihai Road doesn't offer enough!?). The room was spacious -- probably twice the size I was expecting.

beautiful small hotel
my stay was fine. it is second visit. the hotel caters to local businesses and weddings which occupy the main floor. there is no lobby lounge or any place to relax at day's end. they do have a very nice tennis court. they seem to be trying to open a section of another small building on property as a cafe with drinks and food. i think that this cafe is new but it was empty when i dropped by to take a look. the cafe is quite removed from the hotel. the grounds and the main building is well maintained. i do not believe there is a functioning fitness center. for a good location and nice comfortable rooms, this hotel is good. for services and attitude there is room for improvement. i had extended y reservation at agreed up same price and on the first day of new reservation the hotel management said they were all full. they denied the prior agreement , evidently because they were able to get higher rates. was it an honest mistake?? i do not think so.

We chose to stay here at the end of a trip around China and North Korea, and it was the most expensive of the 6 hotels we stayed in but offered the least. The location is good - Shanghai is spread out - and the metro station is about 5 - 10 mins' walk away, passing some very tasty and very cheap food on the way. In fact there is so much range in that one street that you can eat a new breakfast every day for over a week. The French Concession area is well heeled and stylish IMO definitely the place to stay in Shanghai, so this is all good news. But compared to the far cheaper places we'd stayed in in similarly developed and popular cities like Nanjing, Suzhou and Hangzhou, this was disappointing. The main drawback being awful internet connectivity! No wifi except in the lobby and unless you have a Chinese mobile, you need to get a username and password from the staff every 24 hours. The poor desk staff are inundated with travellers asking for passwords, and each time they need to receive a text with a new code. This system is daft for a hotel that aims to attract international guests. There was also no business centre. The rooms are high quality and the hotel is attractive but nothing mind-blowing. Breakfast is expensive and as aforementioned, unnecessary. Staff are efficient but not especially friendly. In this day and age a high end hotel must do better on the tech front.

A Lovely Boutique Experience
Stayed here for one night. Lovely, clean, classy, modern. Only complaint is heavy traffic around the area because of all the one way, one lane streets. However, the grounds of the hotel are beautiful and peaceful. Lots of very good places to eat and things to do nearby. Highly Recommended! Definitely would stay here again.

One point away from excellence
Superb location, several good restaurants, spas and shopping nearby. Easily accessible underground train and buses. All the staff I encountered speak adequate English for guests who can not speak Mandarin or Cantonese. The room with balcony was clean and comfortable and the individually controlled air conditioning worked efficiently. The wi-fi service is available only in the lobby, which can be a grand irritation if you are planning to do business in Shanghai. One phone in my room was dead and the other phone only connected with the front desk.There is no business center in the hotel, even to print a boarding pass. (Staff members were willing to accept a flash drive and use their own printer, but their software is not at all up to date---at least more than a decade old.) Cheaper hotels down the street have business centers with updated software. Why not set up a basic business center here? Again the staff is courteous and very helpful. Location is in the French Concession which was perfect for walks on the hot days of July. (Local temperatures do not drop at night. in July.) If your trip does not involve business and the use of a computer, this one point away from excellence is probably not at all relevant. Enjoy.

I had a king with balcony. The tree-lined streets of the neighborhood certainly shielded one from the July heat. Only one problem: mine was a business trip, but the hotel has no business center (read computer printer even for boarding passes) and the wifi in the room does not work. Period. For printing there is a little closet-sized office almost diagonally across the street that is favored by students and is reasonably priced. If you do not read Chinese, you may miss it, though it is identified in large red characters on a white building. Wifi does work in the lobby; hence, those who are willing to set up a private office space in the lobby can have computer access. That is why they did not receive a "very satisfied" in my estimation. If a cheaper hotel like the Donghu down the street can offer wifi and have a small business center, although expensive to use, why can't the Fenyang Garden? It is inexcusable.

Quiet retreat in great location
Fenyang Garden Hotel is in a great location, in the French Concession area. There are some nice restaurants and good shopping (Huaihai Rd) in walking distance. Metro lines 1 and 10 are less than 10 mins walk away, too, with People's Square only 2 stops away. The hotel is in a nicely landscaped garden (check out the afternoon tea room for a great view of the garden), in a lovely old building. Our room was very spacious and clean, and the beds were comfortable. There was no smell of cigarette smoke. Service was very friendly and prompt. Even though the staff's English was not necessarily perfect, we never had a problem making ourselves understood. The only slight negative of this hotel was the breakfast buffet, which was expensive for what they offer. We just had breakfast outside the hotel, which was not a problem. Overall, highly recommended - and a great rate on hotels.com.
