The sand is soft and the water perfectly clear. Accra, also known as Rockley Beach, five kilometres south of Bridgetown, on the south coast of Barbados has a relaxed, laid-back vibe. It also just happens to be one of the island’s most spectacular beaches. From early morning until the sun sets, all through the sunshine-filled day, there’s something to delight you at Accra Beach.Start the day with a stroll westwards along the smooth, wooden South Coast Boardwalk, which stretches over a kilometre and a half along the coast, from Accra Beach to Hastings. As you walk or jog alongside visitors and locals with the sun warming your back, enjoy the peaceful morning views of the ocean and look out for sea turtles or crabs in the rock pools. At lunchtime, there are plenty of restaurants serving fresh fish caught that morning and brought to harbour nearby at Oistins fishing town. There’s an incredible variety to choose from. Tuck into swordfish, tuna, marlin, flying fish or mahi-mahi, or find delicious light snacks and meals at the Quayside Centre near the beach. In the afternoon, relax in the shade of a palm tree or beach umbrella sink your toes into the warm sand and soak up the scenery. The sea air and sun will relax both body and soul: this is the place where the meaning of true bliss is revealed. Nearby, small kiosks sell local handicrafts, jewellery and clothing that make fantastic souvenirs or gifts – mementoes of your time at Accra Beach.Everyone can enjoy wading out into the gently-sloping ocean floor to swim in the cove or hire a snorkel and you can explore life underwater. For more active visitors, this southern shore gets more waves than many other Barbadian beaches so it’s perfect for a spot of surfing or bodyboarding. There’s enough to see above and below the water to keep you busy for hours.Stay for the evening and you’ll see the sky flaming with pink clouds tinged gold as the fiery sun sets once again over the cove at Accra Beach.
