A landscape of extraordinary natural wonders and the buzz of an exciting, creative city make the world’s northern most metropolis a fascinating place to explore.

Reykjavík may be small but the capital of Iceland impresses with attractions and things to do. This winter city has an impressive music scene, geothermal swimming pools, the wondrous northern stars, a Viking history and some of the safest streets in Europe. The city is also a gateway to the some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the country, which can be explored on a relaxing day-trip or a multi-day adventure.

The weather can be unpredictable, so be sure to plan ahead. When the skies are clear, head to Reykjavík Harbour to see the colonies of puffins and whales. Unwind with the locals in the downtown parks, stroll through the markets or take a walk by Tjörnin Lake. Explore the Old Town and climb to the top of the largest church in Iceland, the Hallgrimskirkja.

In the winter months, between October and March, the aurora borealis (northern lights) bloom over the city. This breathtaking phenomenon can best be seen on clear nights. Wrap up and head to Öskjuhlíð Hill, Hljómskálagarður parks, Miklatún or Grótta lighthouse to get the best views.

When the wind whips through the city take refuge in one of the many museums. Discover how the country formed into the nation it is today at the National Museum of Iceland. See Iceland’s oldest archeological ruins at the Reykjavík City Museum and explore the 871± 2 Settlement Exhibition. Learn about key moments in Iceland’s past at the Saga Museum, located in a water tank at Perlan.

Although Reykjavík is geographically small, it is one of the creative and cultural capitals of the world. Explore the abundance of galleries, bookshops and unique boutiques. Check to see when Björk or Sigur Rós are playing or better yet, head to any of the popular bars or live music venues to see who the next big musical talent will be.

After trekking through the countryside or dancing the night away, relax your muscles in a natural geothermal spring. There are seven to choose from, including Arbaejarlaug and Laugardalslaug.

A trip to Reykjavík is best planned around the seasons and the activities you want to do. Mid-June is a great time to visit as there is nearly 21 hours of sunlight, giving you ample time to explore everything this awe-inspiring city has to offer.
