Province of Terni Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Orvieto which includes heritage architecture
As you journey through this central Italian region stop by ancient hilltop towns, beautiful medieval churches, Roman ruins and countryside beauty spots.

The province of Terni sits in the heart of Italy and is a place of beautiful scenery that is filled with rich historical treasures. Visit centuries-old basilicas, explore underground grottoes and go hiking by a waterfall built by the Romans.

The capital of the province is also called Terni, an industrial city that was founded more than 2,000 years ago. It is also known as the City of Lovers, because St. Valentine was born here and became the city’s bishop.

Many parts of Terni city have been rebuilt following the destruction wrought by bombing raids during World War II. However, there are several ancient sites still standing. Visit the Basilica of St. Valentine, in which the saint’s relics are housed. Tour the 17th-century Terni Cathedral, also known as the Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta. Other historical sites include the Roman Amphitheater and the 16th-century Palazzo Spada.

Venture about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Terni to the Marmore Falls, a large park encompassing caves, wooded areas, a camping site and a man-made waterfall created by the Romans. The tall cascade is surrounded by several walking trails.

Travel around the region to see other fascinating sites. In the hilltop town of Orvieto, visit the 14th-century cathedral, renowned for its striking Gothic façade. Enjoy a daytrip to the town of Ferentillo, which has a Museum of Mummies and is close to the remains of Etruscan settlements. Take a guided tour of the tunnels and grottoes beneath the town. Just outside the ancient town of Narni, you can find the stone that marks the geographical center of Italy.

Terni is one of the two provinces that make up the region of Umbria in central Italy. To experience its historical and scenic charms, fly into Rome, which is 62.7 miles (101 kilometers) away. Being an industrial town, the province's capital is well connected by road and rail. Get around by public transportation, rental car, taxi or train.
