While the hours away in Lima’s lovely old town square, which is home to the Cathedral of Lima, the Government Palace and an iconic statue of the city’s Spanish founder.

Head into Lima’s historic town centre to see the birthplace of the city, the Plaza Mayor. This spacious old square is home to some of Lima’s most recognised historical attractions, including the majestic Cathedral of Lima and the elegant Government Palace. Take your time to explore this lovely pedestrian zone, a pleasant retreat from city life and a lively public space.

The Plaza Mayor originally had its inauguration in the early 1500s. It has also been known as the Plaza de Armas, the Plaza of Weapons. The space has served a variety of uses over the centuries, including some dramatic periods spent as a market, a ring for bull-fighting, and the city gallows. Now the Plaza Mayor is a laid-back pedestrianised plaza lined with yellow colonial buildings, many of which are home to restaurants and stores.

To the east of the Plaza Mayor, you will find the grand Cathedral of Lima. Take a moment to admire its elegant baroque façade and its two iconic towers, which rank among the city skyline’s most recognisable features. Head inside to find the tomb of a prominent Spanish conquistador, along with a noteworthy collection of artworks.

Have a break from sightseeing with a picnic in the square. The green spaces and trees that line the Plaza Mayor make it a scenic relaxation spot. Look out for the square’s other features of interest, a large fountain and a statue of the city’s founder on horseback.

Visit the square at noon to see the ceremonial changing of the guard outside the vast Government Palace. Take a guided tour of this storied palace, which currently functions as the Peruvian president’s current residence and a regular meeting place for government.

The Plaza Mayor is located in central Lima, just a block south of the old Desamparados Station. It is easily accessible by bus via the Estación Jirón de la Unión. While you are in Lima’s historical town centre, continue on a nearby attraction such as Parque de la Muralla (Park of the Wall) or La Merced Church.
