As Nice’s main square, Place Massena is a hub of activity at all times of day. Located at the crossroads of several main boulevards, the plaza sits between the Old Town and the New Town. Tourists rub shoulders with school children and office workers as they hurry through the plaza on foot or by tram. Grab a table at one of the many cafés or restaurants and watch the city’s busiest square come to life.
The buildings lining the square have been painted a pretty shade of red with contrasting blue shutters, representing the traditional architecture in this area. Duck under imposing stone archways to explore the restaurants and shops. Don’t miss the branch of the prestigious Galeries Lafayette, France’s most famous department store.
In one corner of the Place Massena sits a 7-metre high statue of Apollo, part of an elaborate fountain that tells stories from Greek mythology. A more contemporary art installation by Catalan artist Jaume Plensa is also of note. Best seen at night when it’s dramatically lit up in bright colours, seven statues of kneeling men representing the seven continents are held up by tall poles running along the tramline that runs through the square
.
The Place Massena plays host to different events throughout the year. There is a Christmas Market in December, complete with tree and large Ferris wheel. If you’re visiting Nice in summer you shouldn’t miss the fantastic Bastille Day celebrations. Held annually on the 14th July, there is a military parade and spectacular fireworks.
The square is just a few minutes’ walk from the Promenade des Anglais, and only a couple of tram stops from the main train station. The area immediately surrounding the Place Massena is perfect for designer and boutique shopping.
