"Very friendly staff, great vintage ambiance."
We were promptly greeted by the bellman who assured us of the amazing stay we were about to have (which we did!). The hotel is a restoration of an old sailor's lodging house (it is even the place Titanic survivors stayed). We only had one night there but from what I saw the customer service was amazing and our room was perfect (it had a view of the river). They have a great little coffee bar downstairs as well.

"Perfect for me!"
I was travelling alone, so mainly booked this hotel as they did cheap, single rooms. It was very clean, and the shared bathrooms (two between each corridor/four per floor) were cleaned be very day, and the halls vacuumed. The sheets etc in my room were also clean. My room had a TV, although the variety of channels wasn't huge, a safe and a sink, as well as an AC. It was really useful to have a sink in the room, and it also meant that I never had to wait for a bathroom to be free the whole stay. Mine also had a double bed, against the wall on one side, despite being a single room. The WiFi was good, not super fast but that was only a problem when streaming video, the rest of the time it was fine and meant I could plan the next day. My room was non-smoking, and it seemed like there were specific smoking floors, as the ground floor corridors smelt of smoke and didn't have the signs. The lift was unusual, too, but not in a scary way! The place was easy to find, and only a couple of minutes walk from the L train at 3rd, or less than ten minutes from Union. The street was pretty quiet for NYC and the area felt safe, even at night. If you walk down a couple of blocks to 12th there's an awesome place called S'Mac where you can get custom man'n'cheese takeaway, too, if you feel like eating in the hotel. No breakfast is provided, but there's a diner on the corner of 3rd which does a decent breakfast and is on the way to Union, too!

"PERFECT location"
We stayed at this hotel for four days and three nights for a long weekend. We were a little scared to share a bathroom (new to us) but it worked out great! Our room was right next to the restroom which made it convenient. We were really impressed with how clean the bathroom was. The hotel provided robes and shower shoes to make the trip to the restroom more comfortable. All the figures were new and there was always hot water no matter what time we took a shower. Our room was very quiet. It was a normal sized room for NYC. You don't spend much time in the room anyways. It was the off-season so there weren't as many tourists around. We also liked that there was a communal computer in the lobby that we used to print boarding passes and tourism tickets. The staff was helpful and friendly. The best part about the hotel was the location. It is 4-5 blocks from Grand Central making it really convenient to get on the Subway and/or get on a tour bus which meets nearby. There are several food places nearby as well. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.

"Awesome experience!"
We arrived at the Manhattan early evening. The young lady behind the desk took our reservation and gave us the keys to room 527. I had paid for a regular room, and did not expect much after reading some of the reviews online. Man, was I wrong. She gave us a room on the 5th floor - the ONLY floor with balcony's to view Times Square, etc. VERY NICE! Our room was clean (and cleaned daily on our 5 day stay), the staff was OUTSTANDING, and our overall experience in NYC was much more than I ever expected. I can not state enough how FANTASTIC the staff is at the Manhattan. From the front desk professionals to the professional drivers to the bag check professionals - all 2nd to none. Everything was, "Yes, sir"; everyone was polite and extremely helpful. I was not looking forward to coming to New York City. After our trip, we cannot wait to come back.

"Excellent NYC value"
Just spent two perfectly pleasant nights in one of the loft doubles at the Cosmopolitan. I believe that many of the negative reviews here & on other sites predate some renovations and are from travelers who may have had slightly unrealistic expectations for a budget NYC hotel. Yes, the rooms are small- to be expected, but there is ample room for two people to do what needs to be done before hitting the city for the day. Yes, there is street noise- folks, it's NYC. We may have had one of the "big" lofts as I was able to stand up comfortably in ours. The room was unique, well appointed and extremely clean. Bigelow products in the bathroom are a nice touch. Our interactions with the staff were minimal but pleasant. The elevator IS extremely slow, so impatient types or those who struggle with stairs may want to request a room on a lower floor. Free wifi is a super bonus, but it does boot you off and require logging in again every hour or so. Unless you are inexplicably streaming video in your room, not a big deal. We did not have any issues getting cell service. The location can't be beat- fun neighborhood with plenty of bars, pubs, restaurants and street meat available, train right outside the door, walking distance to the World trade Center and Brooklyn bridge. For the price, I don't imagine this place can be beat in NYC proper.
