Spot works by some of the greatest haute couture designers of the 20th century among this museum’s outfit, furniture and jewellery exhibits.

Find the delicate line between function and aesthetic at Lisbon’s Museum of Design and Fashion (Museu do Design e da Moda - MUDE). This institution displays exhibits of clothing and various design objects from throughout the 20th century and drawn from around the globe.

The museum’s striking exhibits are enclosed in an equally artful building. This eight-storey structure uses the exterior of the former bank that stood here. Inside, unpolished cement walls and columns create a sleek modern atmosphere, allowing for a stunning background contrast to the museum’s 2,000 exhibit items.

Spend a few hours browsing the museum’s galleries. Follow the exhibition set up, which is carefully ordered by chronological themes. These exhibits represent styles from as early the 1930s art deco era through to the modern day.

In the fashion area, spot the hallmarks of several huge names of classic haute couture, including pieces Christobal Balenciaga, Paco Rabanne and Pierre Balmain. Their haute couture designs are custom-made and hand-sewn. Often, these outfits will be compiled using the finest materials available and unique decorations will signify the identities of their designers.

This particular collection of around 1,200 couture outfits was donated to the museum by Francisco Capelo, a successful Lisbon businessman. Walk up close to each dress and admire the intricate detailing on the garments. Highlights include an eye-catching Jean Desses yellow gown worn by Renee Zellweger at the 2001 Oscars.

In the design area, enjoy strange and cutting-edge designs of furniture, jewellery and glasswork from throughout the 20th century. This gallery features the works of over 230 designers since 1937, including such renowned names as Charles Eames, Phillipe Starck, Tom Dixon and George Nelson.

Find the Museum of Design and Fashion in downtown Lisbon, in the Baixa neighbourhood. Get there using frequent tram or bus services from around the city. The museum is open daily except Monday and does not charge admission. If you get hungry, find a traditional seafood dish at one of many restaurants in the surrounding area.
