Excellent location but aged room
Before I start I must mention that I stayed in this same hotel 10 years back. That was too from recommendation from one of my family member who was a regular visitor here. Back in 2008, when I stayed I was very much pleased with the room and service. To add to that, the location is amazing. You are in the heart of the city, close to CST and fort area. So when in 2018 I again planned to come to Mumbai for a short trip, I didnt have to look for hotels. I knew where I am going to stay. But this time I got disappointed with the hotel. The rooms do not seem to get maintained properly. I was given a room with broken chair and bathroom door knob. But still there are things to praise for. They are very particular about your address proof for safety reasons. I had to show my marriage certificate to prove that mg companion is my spose. One more thing is included breakfast. So overall, this is in a nice location but if I come again, I will stay somwhere else. You can still book your room here if you want to take advantage of the location but dont expect the rooms to look what you see in their website.

Basic and clean hotel in a great bazaar location.
Cleanliness of room and bathrooms is very good. Great location near Crawford market. Also very close to the VT train station (now CSTM). Standard room I stayed in is quite small, just the bed and a few extra feet of space, but I was travelling alone for business so that was all I needed.

Worst Hotel i’ve Stayed at in the last 5 years
Terrible. Reception staff were unfriendly. The room was dirty. We booked two single beds but were forced into a double bed (as no room as two single beds). This was not worth the price payed. Avoid at all costs.

Terrible hotel in Mumbai
We arrived at the hotel NEW BENGAL in Mumbai at 13 Jan 2017. I booked 3 rooms for 2 nights from 13 Jan until 15 Jan. But at the reception staff immediately told to me that they can give us the rooms only for one night, even though we paid for two nights. To my question "why ?" they said, that I made a reservation via Expedia, paid to Expedia, so I must call and ask to Expedia. And hotel is full booked for second night. I said that Expedia payd to hotel for two nights, but they told to me, that they not received any money. As a result, in the morning 14 Jan we were evicted, but were allowed to leave the luggage until the evening because in the evening can be vacant rooms. It was free. In the evening we were offered the cheapest rooms. This rooms were not the ones for which we paid, and the cheapest (I have photo). It was also asked to pay for the towels because in these rooms we must pay for the towels. When I said that I payd for the more expensive rooms, we were given towels free.
For this room i paid more than 30 USD for 1 night

Expensive hotel for no value for money
I paid lot money online booking and room was different on website but when checked in, i was been allocated to very different room at dark corner. Bed sheet was not clean at all. Pillows so dirty. Will not suggest to any one for this hotel.

The Hotel New Bengal looks quite nice in photographs and even not too disastrous from the exterior. The foyer is well kept and there is a functioning lift and the rooms are air conditioned. It is a far stretch from living on the street but not what you would call a hotel. There is a lot of exposed wiring, much exposed construction relic (rubble, brinks, concrete bags etc) and many of the rooms are only 3/4 length walls. The hygiene of the bathrooms, especially the shared washrooms is highly questionable and although the porter staff are very friendly and helpful, the staff at reception are very disinterested in you and many extra charges and tips pop up unexpectedly. I didn't feel safe leaving valuables in the room so I brought all things of worth with me on daily outings.

Great location for real India area.
Local area. Market 200 yards away. resturants and cafe's on the doorstep. Not tourist area therefore no begging and touting. Next to railway station. School of Art and crafts. Taxi's outside. Lots of street activity.

Not worth it
I would advise staying somewhere else. It's just not a nice place, there were cats in the third floor hallways and the first flood was still being built. When I arrived they put me in a really low grade room even though I'm pretty sure I booked something better. They did try and put me in a better room but at a cost. The whole thing just wasn't a pleasant experience, find somewhere else, your better off.

Single rooms are very expensive, although conditions are not very good.Some are bit smelly and plug power not working.They are broken. wi fi does not work great.

Great budget hotel in Mumbai
Staff very helpful when we needed to have our rooms together with outside space. Breakfast included in the price,served nextdoor in a cafe and was really nice good choice including eggs. Good location for CST station,Crawford Market.

Staff very helpful. Needed 2 rooms next door to each other and this was accomplished without ant fuss. Ideal for train station and easy taxi to various places in Mumbai. Good budget hotel with breakfast and a great restaurant. Balconies also gave opportunities for people watching as well as socialising

Overpriced and Charmless
The hotel is relatively clean, the Wi-Fi was adequate, and the neighborhood was interesting for me. A woman alone might find it unsafe after dark. I wouldn't stay again, however. My initial room was an airless closet, stifling without AC and too cold with (the AC wasn't adjustable). My first night, after I arrived very late, I realized to my dismay the hotel hadn't provided a covering sheet, and I was forced to sleep in my pants and jacket. When I mentioned that the next day, the front desk personnel just shrugged. It wasn't a concern for them. I asked for a new room, and they put me in the hotel's most expensive suite without suggesting other possibilities, and when I left, they tried to charge me the higher rate for both of the two days I spent there. Such "mistakes" should never happen. My more expensive room was bearable, though it had no desk, but the hotel staff, corporate employees, seem to regard guests as chickens to be plucked. Summary: Cleanish, interesting neighborhood, good Wi-Fi, unfriendly management. Regard as a last resort.

New rooms are comfortable.
The old rooms are not suitable to stay any more. The annex building with new tip top rooms are much comfortable. We did enjoy our stay.

2 Night Stay in Mumbai
used this hotel for a 2 day stopover in Mumbai before flying home to UK. was initially worried as reviews were somewhat varied..My main concern was cleanliness,on arrival they allocated me a room, which although small was clean and had a hot shower, basically it ticked all the boxes, Mumbai is an expensive city and for £50 for 2 nights, i felt this hotel was good value for money.. its central and only a short cab ride from most of the sights..if your expecting luxury dont book this hotel, mif your looking for somewhere safe, clean and basic, it'll do the job..

I booked hotel for 4 nights. Hotel is in good location but my single executive room that cost about 60 dlls. with all taxes and fees per night was terrible. 48 year old hotel is old; dirty. My room was 10 feet by 5 like a jail cell with walls that were peeling. Bathroom was tiny. I tried to move out on second day but receptionist told me that payment had been made, that I had to pay for all nights anyway. I am not sure I will use this travel brand anymore.

Hotel New Bengal - a good place to start in Mumbai
Although the building is a little tatty, the lift old-fashioned, and there was some building work going on during my stay, the cleanliness of the place was outstanding, and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. If I return to Mumbai, I would probably stay there again. Very convenient for buses and trains, right by Crawford Market and some popular Mumbai sights quite close by.

Location, was clean at my stay
I stayed at little sinle executive room. AC was broken, fan on the top was OK. Construction yard is just next to hotel, but it was clean, and OK for two overnite stays as I didn't expected much from Mumbai hotels.

Good Location
The hotel room was very tiny (6' by 12') and not very clean. Suspection of bed bugs as the bedding was not overy clean looking. The overall look of the hotel was not very good as there are matresses piled up, boxes and other items in the hallways, Needs a good cleaning.

Clean hotel in central Mumbai
I booked this hotel for my son, who was making a short visit to Mumbai on a longer trip. The two main criteria were cleanliness and being close to the main railway terminus. He tells me that the hotel scored on both counts, and that the facilities were certainly good enough for his purposes. He found the staff pleasant and helpful. Before going he sent a couple of general queries to the hotel office about the practicalities of visiting Mumbai and their responses were both prompt and informative. Bearing in mind the modest cost of staying here it would be unfair to expect the facilities of a very expensive hotel, but if what you want is somewhere clean and wholesome to stay in central Mumbai, this hotel was a good choice.

Not worth the price
A very much run down hotel. Very basic even by indian standards. The choice is between a "luxury A/C room" extremely noisy and ridiculously expensive on the street side and a filthy room windowless already inhabited by quite a few roaches. The check out time is 9am, not noon. Yes it is part of their tricks to have you pay for another day.

Unreasonably expensive and not so clean in a neighbourhood that our guide told us to stay away from. My girlfriend got bitten by lice in the bed, and they wouldnt even admit that they could have a lice problem.

Hotel New Bengal--never again
After staying one night at this hotel, I vowed never to trust reviews on Hotels.com or any travel website. I am a well-traveled person who has stayed at many budget hotels. I just didn't get it. How can this hotel manage to attract so many guests? I found out that this hotel is one of the handful hotels listed on Lonely Planet. No wonder travelers flock to this hotel. Mumbay is an expensive city, yes. But trust me, you can do so much better with the same amount of money. Don't always trust travel books or websites. My room was supposedly the most expensive one at this hotel, but it was just pathetic. It was nasty. But after demanding that the management show us other rooms and inspecting a range of rooms on different floors, I had to agree that the room they gave me was indeed the nicest one, haha. It was so untidy and the bathroom was just unbearable. Mosquitoes were flying all around and when I opened the closet I was welcomed by a decent sized cockroach. Mosquitoes kept me awake all night (this was November). This hotel is not worth the money they charge you. The only good thing was that it was conveniently located. It was near the market (not the kind of shopping places where tourists go to, but where local people go). We wanted to hang out where Indian people hang out, rather than wasting our time in Colaba and other usual tourist destinations. The hotel is also within a walking distance from the train station. But, well, it's not a place to stay if you want to get some decent sleep at night. Just forget it. Do some research and try a different place. You should only stay at this hotel if you get at least a 50% discount.

I got a 6 by 6 ft room, that had no window and was so damp, I had to leave after 1 night only. Location was okay, if you're willing to move away to get anything like a proper meal. Neither a restaurant at the hotel, nor a proper one nearby and very noisy street almost 24\7. A\C and fan was okay. So not good value for money.

yeah..., nothing would be recommanded except the convenient position. meanwhile, nothing should be complained considering its price which seems reasonable only in mumbai.

Walls Moving with Bed Bugs
The experience at the Hotel New Bengal was unforgettable. We have stayed at some awful properties in our lives, but this one was the worst. It even beat the hostel with condoms in the drawer, a one-eyed cat, and bloody tissue in the room! The walls were literally moving with bed bugs. We had to cover our mouths so as not to breathe them in, and we had to shake them off our clothes. We decided to sleep at another location because we didn't want to jeapordize our health as the bed was coated in over a dozen of these moving creatures. Had we wanted bed bugs, we would have paid less than 1/4 the price and stayed elsewhere! The whole reason that we chose this hotel was that there were supposedly no bug issues. The price was not justified. The AC and outside were incredibly noisy. Water leaked from the AC and attracted mosquitoes and birds. There were homeless sleeping just outside the front door. The room had such thin walls that we could hear the neighbor's porno video clearly. The breakfast buffet consisted of one egg. When we asked for another egg, they tried to charge Rs. 75, which is equivalant to over $2. When we asked the front desk later about this and they said that shouldn't have happened, but it did. Thus, the staff were also dishonest and the breakfast was not a buffet as falsely advertised.

New Bengal Hotel
Basic hotel close to Victoria Station, walking distance to markets and major attractions. Staff very friendly and helpful, stored my bags for 12 hrs... Good for singles, even deluxe are very basic but... well it's the big city for under $30.

Good service, hard to find
Very good value for money considering the prices of other hotels in the area. Good service. Very hard to find the hotel. Taxi driver dont know it. The phone number you receive does not work which makes it much harder to get there. Their free pick up service is great (there is a charge for airport parking etc...)

Rooms are not large or well decorated, but they are extremely clean, great hot shower and comfortable beds. Staff was very professional, helpful and friendly. The hotel affiliated restaurant next door was delicious and the service was excellent and wonderfully friendly and personable. Overall experience with the hotel was a very good one.
