Mission Beach has been a popular seaside destination for nearly 100 years, with the earliest holiday homes dating back to the 1920s. Nowadays, after the development drive in the 1960s, this affluent suburb is the perfect mix of lively attractions and good old-fashioned charm.
The beach itself is known for its carnival atmosphere, and you’ll never tire of people-watching as you stroll along the boardwalk over the sands. Look out for the many beach volleyball matches, and even join in if you fancy. Alternatively, hire a pair of rollerblades and see if you can keep up with the locals weaving around the pedestrians. At the weekend you may even be treated to a free demonstration of trick skating.
The main attractions are centred around Belmont Park. You’ll spot the outline of the Giant Dipper against the sky long before you get there. Here you’ll find both traditional fun fair rides such as the Liberty Carousel, the Tilt-A-Whirl and bumper cars, as well as thrill-inducing modern rides. Feel the drop in the three storey-high Vertical Plunge, or take control on the Octotron, which lets you chose your speed and direction.
Head to South Mission Beach for a more laid-back atmosphere. The jetty in South Mission Beach Park is the perfect spot for fishing, whilst watching the boats come and go through the Harbour Channel. For the more adventurous, there are a number of shipwrecks almost one kilometre out to sea that are perfect for a diving expedition. Choose from the many local dive companies for a guide down to the wrecks.
Along the boardwalk, you’ll find a wide choice of different bars and restaurants, offering everything from fast food to fine dining. Everyone likes to keep things simple here, so don’t worry too much about dressing up for the occasion and just tap into the relaxed holiday atmosphere.
Finding a parking space in the streets around Mission Beach can be very difficult, so travel by public transport is highly recommended.
