Travel back in time to a world of jousting knights and hearty banquets.

If you've always fantasised about tucking in to a banquet while medieval entertainment plays out before you, this is your chance. Well, for two hours at least. Medieval Times isn't exactly typical California, but it is a lot of fun, plus you won't go away feeling hungry.

Arrive early: doors to the castle (a mock-up of a Spanish fort) open 75 minutes before the main event, and there's plenty to do in the meantime. Peruse the imposing Hall of Arms and the rather gruesome Torture Museum. Meet the master falconer and his birds of prey, and watch a knighting ceremony. Grab yourself a decent seat (these are on a first-come, first-served basis) and prepare to journey back to the dark ages.

Revel in jousting contests fought by brave knights in brightly-coloured livery, and maybe bet a few gold coins on who will come up trumps. Admire the knights' stallions these beautiful horses are raised at Medieval Times' Chapel Creek Ranch in Sanger, Texas. In all, the company keeps over 400, divided between its nine castles throughout the United States and Canada.

Dine in the company of King Don Carlos, Princess Catalina, and the Lord Chancellor, who introduces the Tournament of the Knights, and keeps you entertained throughout. Find yourself in the court's favour, and you may even be rewarded with weaponry or a crown. Grinning servants bring food to your table oven roasted chicken, ribs, garlic bread and potatoes. A vegetarian menu is available. Don't be surprised if you're not given cutlery though diners are expected to chow down in the authentic medieval manner (things will get messy). A bar is open, serving alcoholic drinks before, during and after the show.

For a souvenir of your time travelling escapade, call in at the various gift shops and buy some medieval accoutrements for your own castle back home.

Orange County's Medieval Time castle is on Beach Boulevard in Buena Park. Pre-booking is highly recommended.
