Take in stellar views from atop this impressive 13-storey structure, which has watched over southern Hangzhou for centuries.

Prior to entering Liuhe Pagoda, the name of which translates to Six Harmonies Pagoda, admire the exterior of the 13-storey structure. The building’s eaves create strips of shade and light, giving the pagoda a unique appearance. Liuhe Pagoda is considered one of Hangzhou’s finest pagodas.

Liuhe Pagoda, which is located at the foot of Yuelun Hill, has towered over southern Hangzhou for centuries. Originally constructed during the Northern Song Dynasty in the year A.D. 970, the pagoda has been rebuilt and renovated numerous times, the most recent of which was during the Qing Dynasty. The 13-storey octagonal edifice that visitors see today is a blend of numerous architectural influences that have been added over the years.

Climb the spiral staircase to the top of the pagoda. Despite the exterior of the building being 13-stories tall, the interior of the building has only seven floors. Each floor has its own small chamber. As you catch your breath while you climb, admire the small chambers’ intricately carved ceilings that feature various flora and fauna.

Gaze out of the numerous windows at the top of the pagoda. These openings are ideal for taking photographs because they have neither glass nor bars impeding the view. Families with children should be extra cautious around these windows.

From the top of the pagoda, enjoy spectacular views of the Qiantang River. Be sure to look for the blue-coloured Qiantang River Bridge. According to legend, Liuhe Pagoda was built to calm the turbulent waters of Qiantang River. Previously, the Liuhe Pagoda was used as a lighthouse.

After climbing to the top of Liuhe Pagoda, explore the adjoining park, which contains models of pagodas from around the globe. As you wander through the park, the miniature pagodas will make you feel like a giant. Try to identify as many pagodas as you can.

Liuhe Pagoda is situated on the banks of the Qiantang River, to the west of the Qiantang River Bridge. The pagoda is open daily and visitors have to pay a small entrance fee. To get to the pagoda, take a bus or taxi from central Hangzhou.
