Known as the jewel of San Diego, the exclusive community of La Jolla sparkles with breath taking natural beauty as well as glamorous high society. It offers some of California’s most prized beaches, as well as luxury boutiques, gourmet restaurants, elegant cafés and art galleries. There will be something to suit even the most demanding of tastes.
Downtown, you’ll find La Jolla Cove, reputed to be the most photographed beach in San Diego. This small picturesque stretch of sand is nestled between the sandstone cliffs topped with graceful palm trees. As the water is sheltered and also ecologically protected, this is one of the best spots for snorkelling and diving. The calm waters are perfect for young children to play in, and at low tide there are many little pools to be explored.
Whilst space may be somewhat restricted in La Jolla Cove, Scripps Park is the perfect space to spread out. Stroll along the walkway along the bluffs above the ocean and enjoy the fascinating view of sea lions playing and soaking up the sun.
Head to Windansea Beach to admire its wild beauty. Fierce waves are whipped up by underwater reefs and jutting rocks, creating the perfect playground for experienced surfers. If prefer not to challenge this surf, there are plenty of aquatic sporting alternatives, including scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking and fishing. Alternatively, head to the Torrey Pines PGA golf course to try out your swing on fairways that have hosted Tiger Woods and countless other professional players.
Away from the beaches, wander down Prospect Street, Girard Avenue and La Jolla Boulevard to discover the high-end boutiques. Although perfect for window shopping, be warned that the prices match the exclusivity of the town! Stop by one of the charming cafés for a latte or a gelato, but if you are after a world-class dining experience, make sure you secure a reservation well in advance at one of the top restaurants with terraces overlooking the ocean.
La Jolla is 24 kilometres north of downtown San Diego and easy to reach by car. Otherwise, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) bus service runs from downtown to La Jolla Village Square.
