The South Korean island of Jeju has a very unique appeal. From the imposing volcanic rocks to the white sandy beaches, it is a true natural paradise. The volcanic activity that formed this island also left some impressive structures, including the Jusang Jeolldae rock pillars in the sea and Manjanggul Cave, one of the biggest subterranean lava tunnels in the world.
The natural appeal of Jeju island is visible all around, in the fields carpeted in bright yellow rapeseed or purple cosmos flowers, and the towering Mount Halla, which looks out over almost every point on the island. Enjoy a walk through Bijarim Forest or follow the course of the cascading Cheonyegeon Falls. Hiking is a popular pastime here – enjoy a challenging climb and fantastic views by following one of the world-class Olle Walking Paths, which are well mapped out and maintained. For fans of a great sunrise, Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, located on the eastern side of the island, provides the perfect vantage point, while a more leisurely stroll around Seopjikoji offers striking sea views.
If you are visiting in winter, it is worth bearing in mind that this season is chilly on Jeju. However, cold-weather activities are plentiful, including the island’s plethora of museums, such as the fascinating Trick Art Museum, the adorable Teddy Bear Museum and the Psyche World Butterfly Park, which has one of the largest collections of butterflies in the world. Finally, whilst the broad sweep of sand at Jungmun Beach offers more in the way of summer activities, the five-star luxury here is a year-round experience.
Visitors to the island tend to arrive by air or sea into Jeju City, as these are the most convenient travel routes. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants and bars in the city, providing a wide range of entertainment, and it is easy to hire a car to get to the island’s attractions. There is also a great bus network on Jeju Island, which makes it easy to get to just about any location. For a real taste for this culturally-distinct island, try its traditional cuisine – the hallabong tangerine and local speciality seafood porridge are great places to start.
