Roar with the fans while engines scream, watch world record attempts or try driving at top speeds for yourself at this world-famous racing track.

Thousands upon thousands of motor racing fans flock to Indianapolis Motor Speedway every year in the hope of watching history being made.

Since its construction in 1909, the four-kilometre rectangular oval track has hosted some of the most spectacular races and record attempts, and it continues to do so every year.

The highlight of the calendar has to be the annual Indianapolis 500 race in May. At this racing event, the world’s best drivers push themselves and their cars to the max over hundreds of kilometres around this track. The air roars with screaming engines and more than 250,000 cheering fans in this exhilarating festival of noise and speed.

The summer months are full of thrilling races, from the NASCAR Brickyard 400 in July to the Red Bull Motorbike GP in August. Anticipation mounts in the days and weeks leading up to the events, with practice and qualification days that are just as gripping to watch as the races themselves. The atmosphere is tangibly electric.

Outside of racing season, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway reveals its inner secrets. From the speedway tour bus, see the timing suite, imagine yourself shaking champagne bottles on the Victory Podium or explore the famous Yard of Bricks. Find out about the drivers, cars, bikes and awards at the Hall of Fame Museum – a National Historic Landmark. This museum is one of the best museums devoted to motor racing in the world and has around 75 different vehicles on display as well as an extensive trophy collection.

To see, hear and feel what Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton go through on the track, the ultimate adventure here is the Indy Racing Experience Driving Program. Wearing gloves, a jumpsuit and a helmet, experience an unforgettable lap of the speedway as you accelerate as fast as you dare in an authentic IndyCar.

When you’ve had enough excitement, the 18-hole golf course at Brickyard Crossing and licensed Indy Grill with a comprehensive menu will let you relax and refuel before you head back into the crowds.

Only 9.5 kilometres from the city centre, Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the city’s most popular attractions.
