Charming Courtyard hotel. Nice staff. Very helpful. 7 min walk to subway. Most cab drivers will not know exactly where this place is. Without proper directions, you may have trouble walking to this place. I advise emailing hotel in advance and asking for detailed directions if you are taking the subway here, or for a taxi, ask the hotel staff to email you the address and directions in Chinese as most cab drivers will need that to get you here.
The place is pretty average by Western standards, but for the price, the quality was ok and the location is excellent. It's 10 minutes walk from Tiananmen square and Qianmen subway, as well as a hutong district. There are shops nearby for grabbing water and necessities. The staff speak no English, but we muddled through with some pointing and miming. The room was not bad, if a little frayed at the edges. If you're looking for somewhere to laze around in luxury look elsewhere, but as a place to dump by stuff and collapse after a long day, it was spot on.
"Perfect for me, for great location/basic comfort"
It really depends on what you are looking for. I really miss this hotel for its great location (walking distance to the top attractions such as Wang Fu Jing and TAM Square) and the basic comfortableness. It is on a quiet street despite proximity to the attractions. The room had no window - but it worked for me, as first it's at the end of the aisle and noise was really low (the rooms were not very soundproof), 2ndly to me a window only provides path for the smog which nowadays often plagues Beijing. At night it was perfectly quiet and dark. And the bedding was just what I like. Clean soft cotton and basic but comfortably supporting mattress. Surprisingly I did not get any aches/soreness I usually got sleeping in cheap hotel beds as I did elsewhere.
On the other side, the room was definitely not at high end. The water was good and hot but the shower was directly onto the bathroom floor, with only a curtain shielding the cabinet from water. The room was very small with only space for a full bed, some basic furniture and not much more open space. I did not even both to go to the roof as everyone said it was not good, and did not try the breakfast which was optional and expensive. But what you want to see is outside, isn't it?
Call if you need a taxi. The main road does not allow taxis to stop, the local street does but it is not where taxis usually pass by. Subway is very close. And many hotels do not provide heat until the official heat providing date in city.
The location is second to none, right in the centre of Beijing.
Staff are very friendly and helpful.
The inner deco is a bit out of dated, having said that the cleaniness is spot on.
Another small thing need to improve is: there is no taxi waiting outside of hotel....so it is a little bit unconvinience if you need one urgently.
Very positive experience: Everyone in the hotel was very nice - the front desk staff, the breakfast team and the housekeeping crew. Next time I come to Beijing, I will definitely stay in Double Happiness again. I wouldn't pick another hotel.
