I have stayed here a number of times and have always found it very convenient, clean and easy to be a guest.The host is always very pleasant and chatty. Generally much quieter than most backpackers which is great

We had a lovely stay at Tristan and Yoko's backpackers. It was lovely and warm, with a log burner that Tristan looked after while we were there. There was te and coffee avaliable and an amazing massage chair. We enjoyed our chats with Tristan. Would stay again.

The best budget accommodation we've experienced in New Zealand. Very comfortable, toasty warm room with an ensuite. Super handy to everything at Hanmer. Pleasant staff. Will defo go back again.

Spent 1 night with my family (2 adults, 13 &10yr old). Enjoyed our stay at this small backpackers. Family room with en-suite was clean and warm. Common areas welcoming. Even managed a family game of monopoly. Location was perfect - short walking distance to shops and thermal pool. Tristan was friendly giving us local information. Would definitely use again.

We liked the way the staff greeted us, that everything in the kitchen was labeled with instructions set out so we knew how to use the facility. Just one small negative was that we couldn’t reach the bathroom louvre window to close it and this made the shower area very cold. Otherwise loved it

The staff were friendly. The building is creaky due to its age. Bedding clean and fresh. Great location in town.

The girls in the room were very loud at night, even though there were several common areas. Id ask to be moved to another room and was charged extra even though it was late at night. The receptionist even knocked on my door to come and make me pay the extra $15 dollars. She took my card upon check in so im not sure why i was made to get up out of bed after having complained and moved rooms. Service was disappointing.

Hi T, We're a bit taken aback by your review. It's not the positive feedback that we usually receive and we didn't see it coming as nothing was mentioned upon check out. We were under the impression you enjoyed your stay in a quiet private room at a reduced price. Anyway, to address the issues raised here is our reply. - You complained about chatting girls in your dorm room at about 20:30(!). When you book a dorm bed you can not reasonably expect your room mates to be quiet by this time. We (as most hostels) handle a quiet time after 22:30. - To accommodate your issues we offered you an upgrade to a private room at a heavily reduced price ($15 instead of the usual $36) - however instead of a "thank you", you complain about being charged for a requested upgrade (really?). This fee doesn't even cover for the cleaning of a room, the stripping and washing of bed linen and the making of your bed. - As explained when charging for the upgrade. We're sorry that we copied your card details incorrectly and therefor we were unable to charge you for the upgrade. When we realized this mistake we had to knock on your door to update those details, this was within a couple of minutes of you moving rooms. To prevent future disappointments and awkward situations in dorm rooms perhaps you should reevaluate your expectations. Enjoy the rest of your travels. Tristan and Yoko @ the Hanmer Backpackers.

Overnight stay while travelling solo
My night stay was organised for the end of a 1200km motorcycle ride. Organising a late book in was easy and bed was really comfy. Perfect place for a solo stay.

Quiet and well located

hostel was cozy but with a tad too many rules. however cleanliness is kept to a maximum even the toilet is constantly mopped and dried. location was a 10mins walking distance away from main town and conical hill trek.
