Government House is the perfect place to learn about Canada’s political system and its unique ties with the British monarchy. In addition to preserving the stately past of its former residents, it also celebrates the daily lives of the housekeepers and cooks who ran the house, providing a fascinating window into daily 19th-century life.

Founded in 1891 as the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Canada’s Northwest Territories, Government House now serves as a popular museum and entertainment center. Venture through the Amédée Forget Museum or the J.E.N. Wiebe Interpretive Centre to learn about Canada’s government and Saskatchewan’s history and people. Interactive and audiovisual displays ensure the experience is fun, engaging and educational.

Step back in time in the Picture Us room where you can be photographed dressed in Victorian clothing. In the Once Upon A Time room, kids discover history through playful, themed activities. Don’t forget to look for the playful Jocko, a stuffed reproduction of a monkey who once inhabited the house. It is hidden in a new location in Government House each month, and if you spot him you may win a prize.

In the stunningly designed Edwardian Gardens, take a stroll amid fragrant roses and herbs. In summer you can purchase a picnic basket from the on-site Butler’s Pantry for lunch and then stretch out on the lawns. Loop up at the distinctive squared dome and Roman arches that make Government House such a spectacle. Artists often frequent the gardens. Art classes are offered at various times throughout the year. Once a month, Government House hosts a Victorian Tea, a popular event on the Regina social calendar.

Admission to Government House on Dewdney Avenue is free, although some exhibitions and activities require a small payment or prior booking.
