Pleasantly Surprised by Florence hotel
Expectations were low for our Florence hotel, which we chose for its low price and excellent location. We were charmed by the staff, who provided spot-on suggestions for less-known sites and activities. Room was comfortable and not as small as we were expecting. Bathroom was modern and everything worked fine. Included breakfast consisted of fruits, croissants, bread, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, cereal, juice and coffee/espresso. Nicely done. This is an old-style hotel, evocative of travel in Europe 30 years ago. Small and personal the staff know you and remember your room number when you return for your key. And the location is close to everything. Short walk to train station and all the sights of the city centre. Would definitely stay there again!

Hotel in the city...
A perfectly acceptable three star hotel. If you examine it a little closely you will notice the wear and tear but five minutes from the duomo... Can you really complain. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was cleaned and tidied daily. We weren't expecting the Ritz... Bring ear plugs if you're on the road side as it can be a little loud other than that its very acceptable.

Stay here and be happy!
Hotel location would be hard to beat; walking distance to most things you want to see and only a few blocks from the train station. Room was comfortable, quiet and clean. Breakfast good enough to keep you going until next gelato! Priced well. I definitely would stay at Hotel Rex again.

Don't stay here.
Worst place we stayed in Italy and it cost the same. Receptionist helpful but curt to rude. Room was dark, beat up furniture, afraid the walk on carpet without shoes, bidet and sink both stopped up, warm water just a trickle and very disappointing. Clean towels and sheets, in room fridge wasn't working and paint chipping on walls and door frames. Didn't smell bad is the best I can say. Night receptionist was most helpful, African gentleman, called our cab and helped us to get off at 4 am to catch a flight.

Friendly Hotel
This hotel is a small gem right off of the Piazza San Lorenzo and the Cappelle Medici. It is situated on a quiet street with stores for business and restaurants for eating. There is a lift in the hotel for those of us that can no longer climb the stairs. The rooms are comfortable. There is nothing fancy or elaborate just a nice cozy room with TV,

Hotel Rex...Hotel Wreck!
Hotel is in poor condition and in front of a loud Irish pub. Windows are not insulated thus you will be hearing all the noise until about 2am. Carpet super dirty and dusty. Buckets of concrete mix and construction tools left in the hallways. Dirty bed sheets, towels and dining room mantels also left in big bags around the hallways. Room at the second floor with a leaky A/C; woke up in a flooded room. When requested a change in room, staff initially said they knew about this but the technician would not be in until 3 days after my arrival. Nevertheless, they were still putting guests in this awful room. The bathrooms' conditions were bad in both of the rooms I stayed. Pipes were broken and leaking water; shower had no pressure and it wouldn't stay on. One night, I had to bathe with a cup...very pathetic. I kept hearing the pipes "roaming" each time the guest next door flushed the toilet. Breakfast was less than desirable. It consisted of instant coffee with steamed milk while the staffs “assure" you is Italian cappuccino or espresso with a smile on their faces. There was only one choice of cold cuts and one choice of cheese. Croissants were not fresh either. Hotel décor is outdated. I am all for old charming but this was plain neglect. There is a big difference. There were no queen or king size beds. If you request such, you will be put in two twin beds tied together. I will not recommend anyone to stay here. This place should be delisted from Hotel.com.

i would not stay here, i deserve a refund
i left a few hrs after checking in. the water in the bathroom sink ran brown when i turned it on. made me take a second look at the room. and the shower was only a non movable shower head in the CEILING over the toilet. brown water? indicates rusted pipes or a room that is NEVER used. i did not want to drink, bath or brush my teeth in that hotel....and it makes you think twice about the food preparation

staff was friendly, but room awful
The only good thing i can say is the staff was friendly and i was able to get back the shawl i had accidentally left there. Room was tiny and smelled horrible, immediately took off old gross bedspread because i didnt want to sleep under, why i accidentally left my shawl, used it as a blanket. Had bookedit by calling hotels.com because the site kept freezing up on me, they knew i wanted to stay close to the train station & was willing to pay a little more than i had on previous bookings because i hadn't been very impressed with those visits either. Payed over a $100, think it was $112 and thank god i had only booked one night! It was fairly close to train station, but bed was uncomfortable, hard & lumpy? Was afraid to walk on the carpet without shoes and it smeeled awful. There was an ashtray on the desk?? Did not know i needed to specify a nonsmoking room and tge hotels.com agent i spoke with that booked the room for me, did not ask me if i wanted a smoking or nonsmoking room. Would not stay there again.

Location is amazing. Everything else is so-so. I feel we got what we paid for. If you are arriving by car - their garage is not where the hotel is, so call and ask how to get to the garage. This is the very center of the very old city, we had a very hard time navigating through it.

This should be called the Wreck Hotel and not Rex
I knew I was booking a 3 star hotel and that it would be small and simple but at least I thought it would be clean. I was wrong! The carpets are awful, there were hair balls all over my room floor, my quilt had soles of shoes marked and there was dust everywhere! The only clean things were the sheets and towels. I folded my quilt and put it in the closet because I was so disgusted. If you can find another hotel for the same price do so!

Hotel Rex is in a great location! Easy to walk anywhere in Florence from the hotel. The street it's on is noisy if you have a room facing it. The staff were nice. There is wi-fi only in the breakfast nook/sitting area on the ground floor. Breakfast wasn't anything special, but it was OK.

Misleading star rating
The hotel does not deserve 3 or 4 stars. Upon early arrival obviously we were unable to checkin since the hotel was full. So I had to use the common bathroom. It was dirty, clogged and out of order. I had to inform the receptionist about its condition upon which she gave me access to the bathroom in the caretakers room. The carpet in that room was dirty and the chair cushion had turned black. Later, upon checkin into my room I saw that the carpet and chair condition was the same as in the other room. Furthermore, the bathroom was very small and had broken tiles. The wooden exterior windows were also not close able. The location is the only positive thing. Minutes walk from the train station and the Duomo. Overall, things need to improve before I can recommend this place to others.

Great location!
Fantastic location, friendly staff, good breakfast. The only possible issue is that our room faced onto the busy street, with a bar across the street. It wasn't an issue for us, but if you're a light sleeper I'd recommend ear plugs. Other than that, the location can't be beat. It was an easy walk from the train station, and to all of the sights.

Avoid or make sure you get the room you booked
We were charged for our stay while booking it on Hotels. On reaching the hotel, they transferred us to another hotel saying that its a better room/hotel. Technically it was better on the ranking, so we were like 'ok its fine'. Thats what many of us do as we were tired of our journey. The hotel we were transferred looked too old and did not offer free wi-fi(we didn't know before checking in!) Also we found mosquitoes in room (A common problem in Italy). Would never book again on Hotels or with HOTEL REX!

Hotel Rex was your average stay. Positives; friendly check in/out, clean, safe, free wifi worked, well located and easily found (less than ten mins from train station). Negatives; very true about the carpet rooms smelling and the shower being extremely close to the toilet. Breakfast was a standard light and basic buffet. Found the Irish pub wasn't too too loud. Although it was an okay stay, I might try and look around for another place the next time. There are many hotels within the area and this one seemed a little overpriced. Over all, it was a decent stay for a one night layover while exploring the beautiful city of Florence!

Little Noisy but Great stay
Great stay, nice service, very nice people that we dealt with, Wi-Fi was/is only in their sitting area downstairs which is the only real issue we had, but we just went without. Location is great, Duomo is about 5minutes one day, and the station is 5 minutes the other way. was a little noisy at night, as there is an Irish Pub across the road, but wasn't bad, windows are double glazed, so its not from a lack of trying to quiten it all down. oh bath room was small too, but they had a plastic chair that we used to push the shower curtain further away to give more space when showering. Breakfast was average, just went down for the coffee to save a few Euros, but i would recommend this place.

The service was good, the only thing I think could have been better is for them to let you know about the extra city tax when you are checking in (good for people to know who have never stayed in an Italian hotel). It was in the fine print of the website, but I thought it was all paid and was not prepared for an extra bill at the end to pay the city tax. FYI, it is 3 euros per person per night.

Noisy
Most of the rooms are on the street front of a busy street. The bars and cafe's directly across the street provide for noise until after 1am each morning. The windows aren't sealed well enough to keep out the noise so it's impossible to sleep. I did ask for a room in the back, but they charged an upgrade of 20 Euro a night. I wouldn't stay here again.

Great location!
Very close to the train station and a perfect jumping off point to visit Florence on foot. We walked everywhere from the hotel and didn't have any issues. Other posts have said that the rooms were dirty - yes, there is some mold on the grout and on the string for the emergency bell in the shower but when I wiped up water that I spilled on the bathroom floor with the white towel, the towel was still white after I was done.

Tiny!
I was a little surprised by the size of my room. It felt like a convent room with what seemed like a child-size single bed and cramped bathroom. It is a convenient location but Florence is such a compact city that it didn't really matter. This hotel is best for people who just need a clean place to sleep. It's a budget hotel but expensive. I was a little annoyed when a walk-in came in and the attendant offered him 40 Euros for the night when I was paying close to $100.

Old world charm in great location
We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Rex. It was very conveniently located just a short walk to Duomo ( central plaza) and to the train station. Room was basic. Bathroom had a typical shower curtain over the drain in the floor. Wifi sometimes failed in the room, but mostly accessible in the lobby. Breakfast buffet with coffee made to order was included in the room rate, which was a big plus. One drawback was windows facing an Irish pub with noisy patrons boozing into the night. Desk staff was very helpful with directions, general information and tour bookings.

I demand a refund.
My 22-year-old daughter and I (58) arrived at the hotel just past 2 in the afternoon on Mar 11. Without my voucher, I gave my name and the clerk found our reservation. I handed over our passports and he asked for the third person's. I said there were only the two of us, but I booked a triple room. I was given the key to 202 and up we went. The room had only one double bed. Who would, in his right mind, expect us to sleep in the same bed? I went downstairs with the reservation confirmation and pointed out to him that I booked a triple room that should have one double bed and one twin bed. Guess what he said? He said, "Triple room is for description only. There are two of you and you want 2 beds, I give you 205." Room 205 was cosy with 2 twin beds about a foot apart. Not about to give up, I got on the internet and found the picture of the triple room. I went down to show him and told him that I booked and paid for a triple room like the one in the photo. By now, he was not too happy with me and insisted the standard double room was what we should have. I didn't think I could convince him, so I gave up. There was also the pain of seeing two girls moving into the triple room next door in the evening. Don't you think that I deserve a refund of the extra I paid for a triple room? Otherwise, the hotel location is great and staff are friendly. Would I stay there again? Maybe.

Do your research if you are driving a car to get around Europe-this one has a fantastic location but no direct car access as it is in the historic centre and tricky to locate-they park your car in a nearby garage for a fee which is fine. No need to walk for ages however as it is right in the heart of the city centre and makes all walking access really easy to markets, monuments, cafes & shops.

Perfect location
One of the older concierge knew the landmarks and provided some great info but the concierge at my check out was rude. The location was perfect and the locals were very nice - it was right in the middle of everything and it was very lively. The hotel could use some upgrade but again Florence is a very old city, it is Italy so I am fairly content with the hotel. I could stay there again but there were other hotels that I might check out. Cleanliness was average, better than I expected. The concierge who checked me in gave us a pretty good size room so there's no complaints except for the concierge at my check out.
