At the heart of the Cook Islands lies Rarotonga, a small volcanic island that is filled with natural beauty and warmth. Although there is plenty of excitement in this beautiful destination, it is best known for its relaxing activities, such as lounging on Muri Beach, snorkelling at the Aroa Marine Reserve, or viewing a performance at the Te Maire Maeva Nui.
If you prefer more excitement, you can catch a rugby match at the National Stadium or take an exhilarating hike up Raemaru Peak. Although this island sees numerous tourists throughout the year, it is still a relatively hidden gem, and because of this, cheap flights to Rarotonga are easy to find.
Flights are at their most expensive from December through February, as the warm weather entices tourists to indulge in some swimming or windsurfing at the Muri lagoon, or to enjoy the gentle breezes while having a drink and listening to live music at Mal’s Lagoon Bar.
March through early May, and September through November make up the shoulder season in this destination. Flights to Rarotonga drop during these periods, as tourists leave the island to return to their everyday lives.
For those who travel during the shoulder season, this is a great time to mingle with the locals at one of the themed evenings at the Edgewater Resort and Spa, or explore the Sir Geoffrey Henry National Culture Centre without a lot of crowds.
Although it can be a little rainy and humid mid-April to August, Rarotonga is still a great place to visit during the off season. Tourists are few, and the island still has plenty to offer, such as tours through the Te Vara Nui Village, sunset cultural nights in Highland Paradise, and glass bottom boat Koka Lagoon Cruises.

Renting a car is one of the most convenient methods of ground transport, but you will be required to acquire a driving license for the area. Another convenient option is taking a taxi, but this method can sometimes be expensive. The local bus service is inexpensive, but you will need to step out of the airport in order locate a bus stop.
