Dundee Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Dundee which includes street scenes
Explore a city built on a jute empire, with magnificent Victorian architecture, beautiful North Sea beaches and an extinct volcano offering fabulous views.

Looking over the Firth of Tay, Dundee is a historic quayside city with medieval foundations. Established over 800 years ago, the city expanded and renewed itself throughout medieval times, the Victorian era and the industrial revolution. See Dundee’s diverse landscapes on a stroll through the city or from atop an inner-city hilltop.

Dundee owes its Victorian opulence to the industrial revolution and production of jute. Visit Verdant Works, a museum in a former jute mill, to understand the industry’s history and learn how its wealth enhanced the city.

The McManus Galleries and Museum and St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral are magnificent examples of Gothic-style architecture. City Square has additional striking architecture. Here, find local markets, community events and tributes to Dundee’s prestige in the comic world.

Dundee’s maritime industries made it the perfect place to build the polar-voyaging RRS Discovery, which you can visit at Discovery Point. Get further insight into the city’s history at the Howff, a centuries-old cemetery in the heart of the city.

Admire stunning city views from Dundee Law, an extinct volcano that is now a grassy summit in the middle of town. Spot the sandy beaches of Broughty Ferry and find the perfect patch of sand to spend the next sunny day.

Enjoy contemporary culture in Dundee too. Check out Dundee Contemporary Arts or the Dundee Rep Theatre to appreciate the city’s emerging artistic talents.

Visit a traditional pub and sample an aged scotch whisky. Try jams and marmalades made from locally grown berries. For a livelier night, head to Dundee’s downtown bars, which are popular with students from the city’s large universities.

Reach Dundee by air, train, bus or car. The city has its own small airport. International airports in Aberdeen and Edinburgh are within a 90-minute drive. Regional and intercity trains arrive at Dundee’s main railway station near the quay. Stay in restored Victorian-era lodgings, comfortable city hotels or beachside cottages. Take a daytrip to the surrounding Glens and Highlands or play at the nearby golf courses.

Improved much over the years with some nice eateries. Didn't do tourist things this trip but the options look good for a stay of a few days.

I studied in Dundee and was returning for graduation, great town, although quiet - it’s easy to get around and well connected by the train so it’s easy to travel Scotland
