For a base on a budget the Mariners is ideal. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the breakfast is excellent. It is well situated within walking distance of the beach and harbour areas.

Pros - Property is located in a upscale neighbourhood and is close to the bay - a short walk of 5-7 mins. It is cean and well maintained. There are 2 grocery stores opposite to the property and one Indian takeaway a few buildings away. Cons - The Babbacombe room that we booked was small and there was hardly any space to walk after putting the luggage. Also I must mention that the handle of the bathroom door came off as soon as we used it for the very first time, which meant it couldn't be locked from the inside! Reported it immediately to the owner but nothing was done to fix it over the next 2 days. Anyways, there were no other issues apart from this one. So overall fairly convenient for staying a few nights.

Pretty hotel close to the city center

On arrival, we met the owner of the hotel. Very friendly person. He showed us our room and asked us whether we had some special dietary needs and offered us cooked english vegetarian breakfast for the next morning. He had some tips for a city tour and suggested the pub across the street "Bull & Bush" (very nice pub with a selection of vegetarian pub food as well). Our room was of a good size, clean and tidy and so was the bathroom. The bathroom has a daylight window, which is smallish but sufficient. This hotel has a car park right behind it. I know, some people might say that they don't want a window showing the car park, but for us it was reassuring that our car was in a safe place. The vegetarian breakfast was really good. Thank you for that! The hotel is in a quiet street, yet close to the bay area and city center. There is nothing to complain, we would come back.

Nice, tidy, clean, friendly

A very pleasant stay. Had all we needed, a nice room with a bathroom. Clean and tidy. Breakfastroom also nice and tidy. Rooms a little small but that was no problem at all. The well organised house made up for that. A few minutes walk to the town centre. Very nice host. English breakfast-very perfect prepared and served. Highly recommend Mariners Guest House

Good B&B experience

Good value, immaculately clean and great service. Only downside for us was our room was really too small for the double bed (difficult to walk around it) and disappointed there was no parking available for us as only space for three cars. Luckily having grown up in Torquay I knew where to go, but others may get caught out by the one hour street parking limits between 8:00 to 6:00pm in the whole area.

Did exactly what we expected. Clean well kept accommodation, friendly welcome and wholesome breakfast. Great value for money. Location worked well for us, and onsite parking a bonus.

You get what you pay for

I realise that you get what you pay for so try not to be overly critical for a budget B&B. Therefore I can accept that the room was small and the shower room dated. However there was also no heating when I arrived and the room was cold, the same on the second day of the stay, the room was cold when I returned from the seminar which I was attending, and the shower was not hot. The towel rail leaked, and as it was off all day the towels were damp in the evening. Worse though were the breakfast hours, with breakfast available from 8:30 onwards. My schedule meant a rushed breakfast on one day, and on the second I had to find and eat breakfast at another hotel. For dinner I arrived back on Friday too late to eat in nearby, and the hotel does not allow take away meals to be brought into guest rooms. This was a further inconvenience, but I understand that this may be common practice in guest houses. Positive points were that the room was clean, the bed comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. Find a hotel that matches your needs - this one did not meet mine. But if the facilities met with you schedule requirements and other expectations then it would be fine.
