The Detroit Eastern Market is a highly popular fixture in the city’s calendar. Head there on a Saturday to join tens of thousands of local residents browsing the stalls in search of fresh local produce. Dating back to the mid-19th century, this is the largest historic public market in the country.
This vibrant market covers six blocks, with a combination of covered halls and open-air stalls. It attracts over 250 independent retailers, selling local fruit and vegetables, meat and fresh cut flowers, as well as unique craft items. As you wander around, the elegant Victorian architecture will remind you of this market’s roots.
Pride of place is awarded to local farm produce. You’ll find that much of the fruit and vegetables on offer have been brought in that same day by local growers. Discover the best cuts of meat and poultry in the designated meat buildings.
If you don’t feel like cooking, there are loads of places where you can pick up a ready-made snack. The market boasts a whole host of gourmet food stalls selling local specialities and home-made treats. Choose from freshly baked breads and cakes, cheeses, preserves and wine, to name but a few. You’ll also find plenty of cafés and restaurants in the surrounding area, so you can stop for a coffee and a snack, or indulge in a full meal.
There is more than just food on offer. Just outside the main market buildings, you’ll discover the Artisan Village, where local artists and designers sell handmade clothing and jewellery, as well as art, photography and pottery. This is the perfect opportunity to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir!
If you want to delve into the rich history behind this wonderful market, join one of the tours that are run every Saturday from May to September. Listen to the tales of rum-running and safe-houses, and the establishment of breweries and art galleries, which have shaped the area you see today.
The main Detroit Eastern Market is open every Saturday, and there is also a smaller market held on Tuesdays between July and October. Limited parking is available nearby, and many buses also serve the area.
