Cologne Zoo has been part of the city’s landscape for over 150 years. Covering 20 hectares in Riehl, the zoological park is home to over 7000 animals from a range of species: big and small, furry and scaly, running, swimming and flying!
When the zoo opened in 1860, it was home to a menagerie of exotic creatures. The zoo’s collection has grown and today animals are housed in habitats that closely resemble their natural environment. Head to the rainforest hall and come face to face with brightly coloured birds and reptiles. The big cats enclosure boasts Asiatic Lions, Siberian Tigers and cheetahs, but don’t worry – there’s a thick pane of glass separating you from them, whilst guaranteeing excellent views for all visitors.
Since 2004, Cologne Zoo has hosted a family of Asian Elephants in one of Northern Europe’s largest elephant parks. The zoo is also an active participant in the European Endangered Species programmes and hosts a variety of rare animals, from black rhinoceroses to European otters and Humboldt penguins. The zoo has a neighbouring aquarium, which is included in the ticket price. Head in here to get close to starfish and sea horses, and enjoy the bright colours of tropical fish.
Cologne Zoo is easy to get around, and many of the exhibits are indoors, making it a great place to visit, whatever the weather. The zoo is open all year round – visit the website for entry times and to book tickets.
U-Bahn line 18 runs from Cologne central station to the zoo, and in summer a Zoo Express mini train takes the scenic route along the Rhine from the Cathedral.
