A proud reminder of Montreal’s lavish past, this farmers’ market turned shopping centre retains all of its old charm.

The Bonsecours Market building proudly stands in Old Montreal and is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable sights in the city. With its silver dome reflecting the sun, the Bonsecours Market is hard to miss. The main building is made from marble and the interior features a range of boutique shops, upscale restaurants and art galleries.

Constructed in 1847 with the help of the city’s trading wealth, the Bonsecours Market was built to show off the city’s prosperity. The building has been preserved and restored to perfection, having once served as Montreal’s City Hall and, originally, as a farmers’ market.

Inside, the building now showcases the best crafts and goods from around the province of Quebec. From boutique shops selling one-of-a-kind goods, fine-dining restaurants serving up some of the best local fare and free art galleries presenting the best of local talent, the Bonsecours Market is one of the best places in Montreal to enjoy an upscale shopping experience.

One particular restaurant definitely worth a visit is the Cabaret du Roy. Set in 18th-century Montreal, an evening here provides a fun insight into the history of the city when it was still under French rule, with entertainment from various classic characters of the era.

The upper floors of the Bonsecours Market are often host to events, such as the Big Fashion Sale – one of the biggest fashion events in the city – held twice a year in October and April. Other rooms are home to the Craft Council of Quebec, the Institute of Design Montreal and the Museum of Costumes and Textiles. With its strong culture of fashion, design and art, the Bonsecours Market is an amazing place to spend a few hours discovering the latest creations by some of Quebec's most talented designers and artists.

The Bonsecours Market is located on the east side of Old Montreal and is open every day. Look out for the iconic silver dome to help guide you if you are on foot. The most convenient way to get there is via metro or bus, as there is limited parking for vehicles. Entrance to the centre is free, but there may be a fee for some of the galleries.
