art'otel berlin mitte, by park plaza was constructed back-to-back with Ermelerhaus, a former residence dating from 1643, the hotel opened in 1997.
Ermelerhaus contains the hotel's restaurant in a skylighted inner courtyard. A few professional offices are located on the top (third) floor of the house, with banquet/wedding salons located on the second floor. When functions are not in progress, hotel guests may ascend a gilded spiral staircase to view the salons, which feature crystal chandeliers and original painted ceilings with elaborate gilt trim.
The hotel itself includes a black-floored lobby with acrylic columns, yellow- and red-leather chairs, a wood-burning fireplace (lighted during the holiday season) in a red wall, and an oval, light-colored wood reception desk--a suitably contemporary, gallery-like setting for displaying 300 colorful works by Georg Baselitz, a noted contemporary German artist.
The lobby includes a computer with wireless Internet access, and wireless access is complimentary throughout the hotel. The hotel's staff speaks fluent English.
