Hotel is in a hutong (alley) and has Chinese atmosphere. Room was simple but OK. Staff did not speak English very well and was not helpful.

Avoid at all costs.
Booked hotel last minute, taxi could not reach the hotel, had to walk. Hotel says does not have record of reservation and they are sold out and no rooms available. They Arranged a room at another bad hotel but have to pay even though hotel was prepaid, also had to arrange taxi to go to new hotel at 2AM by myself, no help from them at all.

Not terrific location, but everything else good
The location is a little difficult to find if you're new to Beijing given that is in an alleyway. However you are next to two train stations. The staff was mostly friendly one staff member was very kind but others were not as helpful. The room was comfortable, bed was nice and the bathroom was clean.

Very Local and Classic Hotel with Great Location
Good location, about 5 mins walking distance to the nearest subway station (Yonghegong Lama Temple station). Plenty of local cafes nearby, open as early as 7am for breakfast. Few international food chains as well such as Costa coffee, KFC etc. nearby. Hotel is located inside a small lane, but it is not difficult to look for it as long as you have its local name in Chinese printed out and ask around. Its location is great because you can experience local life in 'Hutong' which means small lane. Staffs are friendly, they can speak English well. If you need to go to Great Wall, front desk can help you to book a tour. Other than that, all tourist attractions can be reached via subway. Room is okay, please do not expect to have 5 star bathroom. Breakfast can be ordered as well, there is a small cafe in the hotel.

Overall okay, but...
The description on hotels.com is a little misleading. Their airport transportation service is solely based on the availability of the owner's car, and it costs 200 yuan, about the same price for a cab. Also, they do have laundry service, but they air dry the clothes, so you need time to wait for that. We had our clothes washed the night before we left for the airport, but almost all our clothes were wet when we received them back because we didn't have enough time to let them dry. My reason for picking this guesthouse was for the airport transport and laundry service. Seeing as neither of them worked out as I needed, my stay was quite disappointing. I should have just stayed at the nostalgia hotel that I was already at. However, for the price you pay, you still get a (semi) clean bed and room (although the walls looked like they had mold on them). The guesthouse is in a quiet area in an alley that is actually pretty safe, but walls are paper thin, so you can hear the neighbors very easily. If you are favoring cheaper price over comfort (but still want basic comforts like a bigger room, air con, and closeness to some attractions), then maybe this place is for you. My personal suggestion would be to pay 10 or 15 more yuan and find a nicer accommodation. Either way, my wife and I had a safe place to sleep at night, so I can't complain too much.
Thanks a lot for your good advice and stay. You and your friends are welcome to stay here in the future.See you again.

What happened to this place?
We were very disappointed with our week-long stay at The Classic Courtyard (AKA Candy Inn). No courtyard. No window in our room. Restaurant always closed. Wifi painfully slow. Housekeeping left our door unlocked and the young front desk staff didn't seem to understand why that was a problem. And they seemed to have a very hard time completing even the simplest tasks. We gave them a second star because they seemed to try their best, and because nothing genuinely disastrous happened during our stay. But you can do better.

Great location
Better than expectations: - really great location!! In a hutong but close to the main street; 5 minute walk to subway station for lines 5 and 2; super close to Lama Temple, very close to Confucius Temple, very close to Ghost Street - clean and well decorated room - very functional room (despite the initial worry of flooding due to the lack of wall between the shower and toilet, only a curtain was available. In case you're worried, the water drains well and does not spill everywhere) Less than expectations: - very hard beds - only provide a little roll of toilet paper each day - only window was in the bathroom (and a small panel above the door) - thin walls mean you can hear your neighbors TV and people talking outside More or less as expected: - no garden in courtyard Overall, better than I expected given the price I paid and the reviews I saw. Expect what you pay for. I would stay again for the price I paid.

Cheap, nice hotel in a great location!
This hotel has such a great location for the price paid. It is very close to the metro station, as well as the beautiful Lama Temple. It is difficult to find, as it sits within the Hutongs, but it is well worth the cost of a night's sleep in this small hotel.

Small Hotel, felt like family
What a wonderful group of young people running this hotel! Because I was on my own at the last moment, I decided to have dinner each night at the hotel, rather than a lonely table in some restaurant. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced and I enjoyed the company of the staff and watched with them a nightly soap opera on TV. I was treated as one of the family and frequently offered to share treats that one, or other, of the staff had bought. The bedroom was easy to heat (it was December) and there was plenty of hot water in the spacious bath room. The hotel staff really made my stay. In addition, the hotel is located near two Metro stations, making getting around BJ very easy and an ATM was about a five-minute walk away. If you are looking for simple, but perfectly adequate accommodation, and a great welcome, in a convenient location, then this is the place for you.

perfect location but with bad smell in the room
We were satisfied with the location which was very convenient and close to main interest points and restaurants. However, the smell from the bathroom was really bothering. We ended up to put some water in the sink in order to block the smell from tube (that really helped a lot). Besides, we had hard time finding the hotel even though we already learned that there were several names for the hotel. We still couldn't figure out why this hotel has different names. The hotel locates in a hutong; you can see the sign from the main street, but the sign of the hotel is "海納." You have to walk to the front door and look up to see the English name (classic courtyard).

Great little hotel
I booked a 3 night stay and found the hotel to be more than adequate for the price I paid. The hotel arranged a hotel pick up for me and this worked very well, nothing worse than trying to find a hotel after a long journey. My room was clean as was the en-suite bathroom. The bathroom had its own hot water tank so no running out of hot water if other guesets had used it all. The room and bathroom were cleaned each day. The hotel has a small cafe, the menu offers western food, I tried a sandwich and it was nicely prepared and served with fries. The hotel has a washing machine for residents to use (50 yuan). Overall I was very please with the hotel, it is right next door to the Lama Temple, there are plenty of restaurants nearby and it is well positioned for the metro although Taxis are very cheap although a lot of drivers do not understand English and some seem not to be able to read Chinese/Mandarin.

the location was good if you want a more authentic beijing experience, alot of restaurants, no high rises, relatively close to the subway system which is a must, a little tricky to find though down an alleyway which had security cameras placed throughout the walk for those concerned about safety. the place was acceptable but had a slow internet connection... but functional you were able to get anything done. the place was good for the price.

Introduction to the houtongs
It was interesting and fun to be right in Beijing's famous houtongs. I have never seen anything like it. The taxi couldn't find the place without stopping for directions. We were close to the metro, restaurants, and could walk around with the folks who lived there. It was great to not be removed from Chinese life by staying in a four star hotel. If I ever get back to Beijing, I would stay at the Classic Courtyard again.

Close to Lama Temple
Hotel was well located and just behind the Lama Temple. The hotel itself was in a small hutong so it's a bit hard to find and you will most likely not be able to get a taxi to the door (but it's not too far from a larger intersection). Hotel itself was nice enough and had a very pretty courtyard. The staff was also nice and helpful. Unfortunately, the pillowcases were dirty (they were changed promptly when we asked), and the shower slipper provided smelled something horrible (we had to leave them outside our door) but luckily they also provided single use slipper for the room. Wi-fi was temperamental in our room which was at the far end. Overall we still had a good stay for the price we paid when it was on sale.

PERFECT TASTE OF CLASSIC BEIJING
Stayed here for 2 nights after teaching for a month at Tsinghua University with other American friends. We LOVED this place for many reasons which I will list here: 1. LOCATION is perfect… right near lama temple and other hutongs with shopping and food (so many great restaurants nearby) and subway station and ghost st are so close. Some people mention the st being small and scary… THIS IS NOT SO. It is a small "alley" b/c thats what a hutong is! And not once did it feel unsafe at all. 2. HOTEL CONDITION is awesome.. if you are not looking for a fancy hotel but want something better than a hostel.. this is it. The rooms are great, the wifi is great, the little bar and courtyard are adorable. We were in room #105, which is right off bar.. and we noticed no excessive noise keeping us awake. 3. STAFF is awesome (especially SIMON!).. they were so helpful and talkative and just generally nice and welcoming… which made our short stay so memorable. I told Simon that I will return and I totally mean it! Next time I come to Beijing I am staying here for as long as possible!!

Will stay here again next time we're in Beijing!
My girlfriend and I stayed in a double-bed room for a week and a half--the staff was very nice, and the room was very clean. We really had a lovely experience--the cafe is always open, and the staff is always willing to chat if you are--the hostel was exactly the sort of base we wanted to return to after our daily wanderings into the city. The staff are very knowledgable about what's in the area, and someone is always there to help to find the nearest convenience store, or photo shop, or whatever tourist site you'd like to visit. Most of the staff speak English very well, and are very easy to understand, which was helpful! We'll definitely come again next time we're in Beijing.

Very good service!!
Receptionists are great! Simon is a very knowledgable guy and very very helpful! Also, the other girl (who I have sadly forgotten her name) is adorable and always willing to chat. They keep it very clean, the common areas are good, and they have a few tours to choose from. The hostel is good value for money, but it's in an old hutong, which may look scary at the beginning, but it's the norm in Beijing! Close by its the Lama Temple, the underground (2 different lines), and a costa coffe and kfc! If you are looking for a chic hotel, maybe this is not the best option, but if you are looking for a good hostel with lovely hosts, this is great. As an example, we checked out in the morning but went in their Mutianyu great wall tour, we arrived in the evening to pick our luggage (which they kept free of charge) and they even let us have a shower in their staff shower which was a lovely gesture since it was 40 degrees! We had a great time and we will be staying again on our last night in Beijing.

Great location
We booked from the website which showed nice rooms. Our room was just a bed with very little space around it. The bathroom was OK. Perhaps we got the worst room in the place. The staff was friendly, a nice little eating place downstairs, and the food was good. The location was excellent. If we'd had a slightly better room we would return. We loved the hutongs in the area; also very close to the subway.

Friendly staff, good location
We stayed for 5 nights and it was generally a good spot. Easy access to the subway, though empty taxis were often difficult to find--might have been because it was a national holiday. We got a private double for a very reasonable rate although I believe it was a special sale rate on hotels.com and would have been less thrilled if we were paying full price. Room smelled a little funky like it needed to be aired out but everything worked and the bed was relatively comfy and cleaned every couple days. One note, don't let them do your laundry because they overcharge and don't have a dryer so my clothes had to air dry over two days and everything smelled worse than when they started.

Surprisingly clean
Enjoyed my stay in this hotel. The room was as close to "my" standard of clean as I've seen since living in Beijing. Even though the hotel is located off a busy Hutong street frequented by tourists, it was tucked away in a nice, quiet area. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

The hotel was nice but quite hard to get a taxi from. If you don't like a hard bed this place is not for you. There is some building work being done in the downstairs rooms. They start about 8:00 in the morning. Its really convenient for the Llama temple. It had a nice atmosphere. I was the only guy staying there. Hmm

Great staff, and cool neighbourhood
Staff all spoke good English, and were really helpful with advice on train travel and getting around. There's also plenty of information posted around the bar and reception. Rooms were fine and clean enough, though a little damp (bathroom doors didn't work too well, and in one room the fan was also broken); good value for money in Beijing. Great neighbourhood with many little places to eat, and near a large temple. Very welcoming place to stay, would definitely recommend.

Affordable stay near lama temple
This hostel is located very near to lama temple and the environment sets an interesting vibe. As you scroll down the street, you will see fortune tellers that will tug your clothes to seek their service, observe people buying incense and items for prayers. We are really glad that the red lights that formed the hai inn text was hung across the hutong's alley, making it very easy for us to spot the hostel. The room is basic and you get all the necessities. However, I do notice that my bed sheet has obvious blood stains. So, it made me a little uneasy about the cleanliness of the room. The bed is hard and the mattress is probably very old I could feel the spring in the mattress. So, my sleep wasn't comfortable. Wifi is only available in the common area, and not in the comfort of my own room. However, if you are a fuss-free person, this is a good place to meet new people and to stay cheap in Beijing.

The hotel's location is good. But that's all. I always wake up about 7 o'colck in the morning because of the noise in the hotel. The bed is not soft enough for me to sleep well and the wind going through the bed's rift let me feel cold in the night.

Some issues
The hotel is situated in an alley right next to the Lama Temple. There is free WiFi in the rooms, and computers for use by guests in the reception. English speaking staff in the reception. The area has a decent selection of shops and places to eat nearby, including KFC, 7-Eleven, a bakery, quite a few Chinese restaurants and lots of stores selling souvenirs related to the Lama Temple. Air quality in the main street may be even worse than Beijing in general as Incense is burnt excessively here. This is not a problem in the alley where the hotel is located. We had booked 3 rooms at the hotel for 2 nights. The furniture showed strong signs of wear. Some objects (handles on windows and furniture, doors on closets etc.) came off during use. Bathroom was decent. My particular room had a strong smell of cigarette smoke which I found quite nasty (the other two rooms did not). We were woken by loud refurbishment work from around 7 in the morning on both days we stayed there. Bottom line: The atmosphere of the place is a bit charming, but there is a number of problems. My primary points of dissatisfaction was the smell in my room, followed by noise early in the morning. If you can avoid those nuisances during your stay, it should work out as a budget alternative providing you don't mind rooms looking a little worn. You may find better value for your money elsewhere though.

Well kept, well connected, spacious
In contrast to the low end reviews, I found this Hotel without problem, found the staff helpful and the location ideal. Given the huge neon sign hanging across the Pin Yin labelled street saying "Bei Hai Inn" it's hard to understand complaints about this place being hard to find. I guess printing the Chinese script in the HDC confirmation email will help with directions if you don't even have pidgeon Mandarin. I was actually upgraded from a single to a 4 person room a not extra cost due to a slightly late arrival (and HDC not forwarding on my reply stating this). Complainants taking issue with the hotel cleanliness are clearly not used to travelling in China. The place does look a little tired, but so does most Chinese hotels by Western standards - but the place is clean. Wifi works in the bar and foyer, but is patchy in the rooms; the ethernet cable I found wasn't live, but TV works and en suite is clean and warm. Adequate heaters and clean linen for Beijing in winter. Location is very convenient, Decent bike hire for 20 RMB per day and I found the staff fine. It does help to try to speak a little Chinese rather than loud English when travelling off piste in china.

1 Hai Inn Beijing
The hostel is in poor condition. 1. It has 2 names namely 1 Hai Inn Beijing of which the number '1' has dropped half way and hanging half way. 2. It is also called Candy Inn. This name is written on the wall. 3. The location is at the far end of a small side road. Asked 4 shops around. 3 did not know where! 1 pointed to the direction and asked us to look around. 4. The location is very closed to a famous temple with all the shops selling joss sticks and temples things. For those who are sensitive with smoke... no joke!! 5. Only one counter staff (slim girl) is friendly. The rest, very tired looking. 6. Not recommended to stay.
