“Great location”

It was not writen on the hotel description, but it is within the Sassi. So it is as good a location as could be in Matera. The taxi for the train station will cost within 10 and 15 euros. The personnel is pretty helpfull and provides lots of information including a book about the Sassi. Some employees speak english and german.

“Don't miss going to Matera”

We did believe our room would be entirely in a cave, but only the bathroom and entrance were, so that was a little disappointing. However it didn't really matter as we had a stunning view over a lot of the sassi from our large balcony. Breakfasts were good and in another of the caves, fantastic atmosphere, great staff and brilliant coffee in the morning. Roadworks in Matera confused our GPS (and we couldn't have found our way around Italy without one) somewhat, and meant taking some very tight corners to get down to the parking area. Recommend getting the smallest car you can as roads are also narrow. The parking area was pretty convenient to the hotel but some lugging of bags over cobbled paths and up stairs is needed. We felt like frauds having a luxurious bath at the end of the day in a room which had once been part of such poverty as the sassi had been, but after walking the streets it was great medicine for sore feet. Matera is a place we'll return to, very peaceful, extremely quiet, great for photographers and historians, and humbling to see what others less fortunate have managed to survive. Best to see it now before it becomes entirely covered with tourist hotels. It was a definite highlight of our 5 week holiday in Italy.

“A unique experience”

Staying in a hotel constructed out of ancient caves is certainly a unique experience, and one that I can definitely recommend. Our room was enormous, well decorated with a modern and efficient bathroom. The only minor niggle is that the air conditioning was not very effective. But that was offset by being able to sit out on the terrace with wonderful views over the gorge. Breakfast was very good, and we had dinner in the sister restaurant near the hotel where we dined like kings. The hotel is very handy for sightseeing, with tips from the helpful receptionist.

“Fantastic location with maginificent view”

Our room was located right above the lobby, with a window overlooking the magnificent view of the valley and the church. The room was very spacious and clean with all the amenities. Wi-Fi was not available in the room (only in the lobby area) , and some of the dishes in breakfast buffet were cold, so these were the minor downsides in this place. Also, we arrived in our rental car but the car park in the square in front of the hotel was completely full as it was Saturday - we had to park our car temporarily in a distant location we spotted on the narrow street of Sassi area. We moved our car at 06:30 am when most of the cars disappeared, so you have to be careful with the parking (there was no parking attendant). Nevertheless, the stay was magical and we would definitely love to go back there if we were to look for a comfy, clean room with a view of Sassi.
