Hundreds of visitors flock to Barcelona Zoo each day to soak up the sun and admire the incredible array of animals in their natural habitats. The 400 different species include komodo dragons and silverback gorillas living alongside common farm animals.
Located within the city’s Parc de la Ciutadella, the zoo was created after a prominent banker donated his collection of exotic creatures to the city back in 1892. Over time, the site has grown and is now a major attraction for visitors as well as a haven for endangered animals and centre for conservation.
The zoo was once home to the first recorded albino gorilla, aptly named Snowflake. He lived here until his death in 2003 but you can still learn about his life in an exhibit at the gorilla enclosure. You can also find out how conservationists are striving to protect gorillas around the world today. There are two other primate enclosures to visit. Look out for the South American Titi Monkey, the world’s smallest primate.
Everyone loves the spectacle of watching dolphins play, so don’t miss the show held three times during the day. Elsewhere see the pygmy hippos, the African elephants, and the pink flamingos. If you’re bringing children with you, they will love The Farm enclosure, which has a petting zoo. Children can also enjoy a pony ride for a small fee.
You’ll need at least two hours to explore the main attractions here, but a whole day would be better if you want to make sure you see everything. An enjoyable way to get round the zoo is on the miniature train – pick up a timetable and map at the ticket booth as you enter the zoo. There are also small electric cars to hire if you prefer to get around under your own steam.
Opening daily, the zoo’s hours vary depending on the season. The park is 20 minutes on foot from Las Ramblas, and you can also reach it on the metro, bus or tram.
