Shop for local delicacies, see ancient ruins and use this city as a base for venturing into the snow-covered mountains of the Aosta Valley.

Aosta is a historic Roman town located in the Italian Alps. Explore its fascinating attractions, including the remains of ancient walls, gates and towers positioned around the perimeter. This town also makes a great vacation destination for those who want to enjoy outdoor activities, such as skiing, mountain biking and hiking.

Wander around and discover numerous ancient Roman monuments, including an arch dedicated to the Emperor Augustus, called the Arch of Augustus. This magnificent 8-metre (27-foot) wide arch was built in the 1st century B.C. and is considered a typical example of the late Republican-era style.

The ancient gateway of Porta Praetoria is a short walk from the centre of town. This was the main entrance to the old Roman town of Aosta, known as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum. Look for the central arch, where carriages would have passed through. Find another portion of the old city walls by Via Vevey.

Learn about significant archaeological discoveries at the Regional Archaeological Museum. Inspect Assyrian tablets and anthropomorphic statues from Saint-Martin-de-Corléans, an area that contains one of the greatest concentrations of megalithic monuments in Italy. Descend to the basement of the museum to examine the excavated remains of one of the old Roman gateways. For more Aosta history, visit the Cathedral Treasure Museum and the Museum of the Alps in nearby Bard.

As you walk around town, pause to admire the breathtaking snow-covered mountains from the historic town centre. This area is known for its simple and traditional Italian food, including delicious cheeses and excellent wines. Try some of the country’s finest cured meats and fontina Val d'Aosta, a mild and creamy cow’s milk cheese.

Aosta is about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the ski resort of Pila. The immaculate powder slopes can be accessed via a gondola ride from Aosta. This region is perfect for skiing and snowboarding during winter. Take part in other activities, such as hiking and cycling, during the summer. Fly into Aosta Valley Airport and take a taxi for about 5 kilometres (3 miles) into town.

With ancient ruins, museums and outstanding Italian food, Aosta is an excellent place to stay in the Italian Alps.
