The ancient gateway of Porta Praetoria is a short walk from the centre of town. This was the main entrance to the old Roman town of Aosta, known as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum. Learn about significant archaeological discoveries at the Regional Archaeological Museum. Inspect Assyrian tablets and anthropomorphic statues from Saint-Martin-de-Corléans, an area that contains one of the greatest concentrations of megalithic monuments in Italy. Aosta is about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the ski resort of Pila. The immaculate powder slopes can be accessed via a gondola ride from Aosta. This region is perfect for skiing and snowboarding during winter. Take part in other activities, such as hiking and cycling, during the summer. Fly into Aosta Valley Airport and take a taxi for about 5 kilometres (3 miles) into town.
